Sales Manager- Materials & Structural Test Systems - South UK - to £45K (£60K OTE)

A genuinely rare management opportunity with a world-leader in the design and manufacture of precision materials and structural testing systems. Rare, because this company have a very low staff turnover and generally promote from within. Their systems are used to test the physical properties of all types of materials and components including metals, composite and plastic specimens to medical implants, vehicles, structures and buildings. Customers come from many industry and academic sectors including biomedical, aerospace, renewable energy and even Formula 1 teams. This is high cost capital equipment and order values can range from a few thousand pounds to over £1m for multiple machines.

You will be managing a well established team of 10 people comprising an internal sales team of 4 account representatives and an external sales team of 6 sales engineers. Teams are responsible for sales of the full range of products, developing close relationships with customers, providing solutions to their application needs. You will maintain a number of key accounts yourself, however this will take up around 10% of your time. 20% of your time will be spent on pure people management tasks with the remaining 70% managing the sales team and the processes (planning sales targets, monitoring performance, forecasting income etc). Normal enquiry to order timescales is 3 months although this can be much longer especially for customers in academia.

Reporting to the Director of Sales, you (and your team) will be responsible for customers in the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Iceland with perhaps 1 week in every two months spent visiting these Nordic countries.

The successful candidate is likely to have sales management experience within a capital equipment environment with excellent leadership skills. You should be educated to HNC or degree level in an engineering or scientific discipline. Candidates with a materials science / mechanical engineering background will be of particular interest.

The Sales Associate will be responsible for supporting the sales and marketing of the Certified Reference Materials (CRM s) for calibrating analytical chemistry instrumentation in the UK and Europe.

Key Job Functions
· Respond to technical customer enquiries
· Sales tasks including lead generation, follow-up, quotations and negotiation
· Provide sales support to Sales Executives
· Taking/monitoring orders and coordinating shipping
· May attend trade shows, conferences and instrument manufacturer s user group meetings
· Visit key accounts and distributors with a senior sales person
