Employers! Use The Scientific Method when Interviewing!

The essence of the scientific method is to repeat experiments, altering only one variable at a time. Only in that way can you hope to interpret the results correctly. If you vary two things, how do you know which alteration was responsible for the changes observed in the results?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_method

At Seltek we have observed, remotely, over the years thousand of interviews conducted by our clients (by virtue of asking our candidates after the interviews), what happened during the interviews, and how the interviews were conducted. We have found that most employers conduct interviews in a haphazard and seemingly random way, appearing content to 'play it by ear'. How, we would like to know, is such a 'method' capable of truly distinguishing between one candidate and another, and how could the interviewer in these circumstances be capable of making a rational decision as to who is the best candidate for the job?

Our advice to anyone interviewing candidates for a specific job is as follows:

Standardise your methods! Establish a precise procedure that will be followed when candidates come for interview.
Act to impress! If this is the best candidate you're going to see, it's as important for him/her to think well of you, as it is the other way around.
Ask your questions first. The candidate is more likely to give you answers which will enable you to decide whether or not he/she is suitable for the job, than if you allow the candidate to ask questions of you first.
Before parting from the candidate, let him/her know when they will hear from you, and what the next step is likely to be.
If the candidate has come from a recruitment company, pick up the phone and tell your consultant what you thought of the candidate.

Full details about correct interviewing method can be found on the Seltek website http://www.seltekconsultants.co.uk/employersinterviewadvice.htm
